What is the best free recovery software to use?

Help! My PC was reformatted without my consent and my files weren't backed up. I lost thousands of music and image files which were important to me. Is there any *free* software that is guaranteed to get my files back? I used Stellar Phoenix earlier, I found some of my files, but it wasn't even half of everything. (Plus it wasn't registered so I couldn't retrieve them anyway.) Any ideas? Please include the links if possible.
