What are some good video editing software?

I want to make a music video for my recreational purposes and was wandering what are some good software to use to edit the video. I want it to be able to have background music, subtitles and a variety of special effects. Any suggestions ?

[P.S] - It has to be FREE, and if possible please list as many special affects as possible. Thanks. What are some good video editing software? You could try following software for some of your request features:

Virtual dub

A powerful freeware video editor with lots of features, including a choice of compression codecs, splitting, addition of audio tracks.

AviDemux

A free multi-format, cross-platform video editor designed for simple cutting-split-merge, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs.

For more advanced and professional but still user friendly software, i will recommend DVD Slideshow Builder. It's commercial software but worthy.Everything is laid out in an easy to follow step by step instruction.

Check out trakAxPC Pro. It's a new editing suite that allows you to edit and mix any combination of audio, video and photos. You can do effects, text, split screen, reverse, slow-motion etc, plus upload your video directly to YouTube through the application. There's a free (forever after the trial) and Pro (paid) version available.

You can check it out here: http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/

Hope this helps
