How does Walt Disney World preferred viewing area work (for Illuminations and Wishes)?

Where are these areas and how do staff know to let you in?

Just found out that preferred viewing in MK is outside The Plaza and in Epcot it is the Morocco Boat landing area.. Here is a reply from WDW.com:



There are indeed special viewing areas for the evening firework shows at the Magic Kingdom and EPCOT. It can vary due to special activities that might be going on in the parks but it is always with a great view and you won't have to elbow to get a good spot an hour before hand. In the Magic Kingdom you will meet at the Plaza Landing by the Plaza restaurant and in EPCOT you will meet at the Morocco boat landing. It is preferred viewing and there will not be seats.

If you are talking about dinner and show options, they put a bracelet on you. I do not know where exactly those areas.
