Dining plan at Disney World worthwhile if we go to Universal too?

We are planning on going to Disney World in February from the 2-8th. There is 2 adults, a 16 year old and a 12 year old. We plan on spending one day at Universal studios/Islands of adventure. Is the dining plan worth it if we miss that day? If yes, which dining plan? Can you get a dining plan without doing a package?Dining plan at Disney World worthwhile if we go to Universal too?
yes its definitely still worth it (i can tell you first hand cuz i have gotten the dining plan and gone to universal/islands of adventure for 1 day of my trip).

you can just buy lunch at universal but still have dinner in disney so you won't really be "wasting" the dining plan.

i'd recommend the regular dining plan which includes 1 table service meal per person per night, 1 quick service meal per person per night, and 1 snack per person per night.

no you HAVE to have a PACKAGE which would include hotel and tickets in order to be eligible to also purchase the dining plan.
Yes, it is worth it. First, make sure you purchase the dining plan that allows you one table service and one counter service per day. That way, for the day you miss, you can still get a counter service if you get back to Disney at a decent time. Even if you don't, you can use two counter services per day (one for breakfast, one for lunch) and then you could two table services in one day (maybe a breakfast and a dinner). Having the Disney dining plan makes a world of a difference. It is so fun to choose whatever you want on the menu, including a drink and a dessert (which are always delicious and different). The dining plan, if not included as a special offer depending on when you are visiting, runs about 400 a person. The cut off for the children menu and children prices is 9 so you won't have to worry about that...all adult prices in your party.Dining plan at Disney World worthwhile if we go to Universal too?
Well yes it is definitely worth especially because disney just extended a promotion which makes it free! With the disney dining plan the food is not allocated to the day either. For instance if you get the classic plan with 1 table service, 1 quick service and a snack for 6 nights, each person has a total of 6 table service meals, 6 quick service meals and 6 snacks to use whenever they want during the stay. There are also signature dining restaurants at disney that require two of the table service credits - these are some of the pricier restaurants at Disney. So if you go to Universal one day you don't loose any food. I have been to disney a ton of times and found a great authorized disney agent who would help you with tons of info on all the disney restaurants. She cost nothing extra (she gets paid from Disney) and may even be able to save you some $ - send me an email if you would like her contact info.
My mom always gets the dining plan that has 1 counter service per day, 1 sit-down per day, and 1 snack/drink per day. But it's really like a roll-over. Like you could end up not using a snack/drink one day so you could get a snack and a drink another day. The dining plan is definitely worth it. I don't know if FL has a meal tax but they already have a sales tax so it's possible. Plus, with the plan my mom usually gets, a counter service gave you a drink, a meal, and a dessert which if you didn't have would cost you like $22 a meal. That's just for the fast stuff. So you could still go Universal for a day and then come back at the end of the day and have like a sitdown meal at Disney since you already paid for it. They do have a lot of other meal plans too but that's the only one I have experience on.Dining plan at Disney World worthwhile if we go to Universal too?
Most likely No.

The dining plan is not a very good value any more since they took away the appetizer and doesn't include the gratuity. You'd be paying full price for all four family members. For the basic dining plan, that's a total of $184 per day. To answer you question properly, this is what you need to do. Go to allears.net, click on "the menus". Take some time to look at the restaurant menus and prices. See how much you think you'll be spending. Compare it to the dining plan prices.
Yes, without a doubt! We stayed on Disney property and had the dining plan, but spent one day at Seaworld. We still got plenty of use out of our dining plan. Keep in mind that you can always have breakfast at Disney before leaving for the day, then have dinner when you get back. That way, the only meal you will be paying for out-of-pocket will be for your lunch at the non-Disney park.
You must be staying in a WDW resort to get the dining plan.

You can still do breakfast and dinner at your WDW resort.
